Hyperpigmentation: All you need to know

‘Hyperpigmentation’, the skincare buzzword we’ve all heard and probably even used, but do we really know what it is? What causes it and how can we prevent it? 

Simply put, hyperpigmentation is the medical term used to describe the overproduction of melanin. Melanin is the natural pigment that gives colour to our skin, eyes and hair. This increased production results in dark patches on the skin making it appear uneven. It can be caused by a number of things from changes in your hormones due to pregnancy or acne, overexposure to the sun and skin injuries/inflammation.

Overexposure to the sun is actually one of the primary reasons for hyperpigmentation. This is ironic because sunlight is what triggers the production of melanin in the first place! Melanin acts as our skin's very own natural sunscreen and protects us from harmful UV rays. 

Despite it affecting everyone, it is more prominent on darker skin tones. For many this has caused insecurities, with some resorting to the use of hazardous and unsafe bleaching creams to remove marks but in the long-term, it does more skin damage than good.

As a common dermatological issue, there are several types of hyperpigmentation such as:

Melasma - appear as large patches on the skin and mostly more common in women than men. It is thought to be caused by changing levels in hormones.

Age spots - (also known as sun spots) are caused by overexposure to the sun and are mostly seen on mature skin

Post inflammatory - appear as spots or patches of darkened skin on skin that is inflamed from conditions such as acne or eczema

You’re probably thinking, okay, but how can I prevent this? Not all forms of hyperpigmentation are preventable but you can reduce skin pigmentation and here are our top tips:

Keep out of the sun especially between 10am and 4pm (this is when the sun's rays are at their strongest)

Shade, shade, shade wear protective clothing, sun hats and sunglasses are a summer must have

Top up on your factor 50 even when there’s no sunshine! (wear your SPF)

Moisturise your skin to restore your skin’s lip (fat) barrier which provides further protection
